Day 61: The Last Day
Tomorrow I fly back to Boston, I won't get back until late tomorrow night, but technically I do get back tomorrow. So that makes today the last day of the adventure.
What crazy thing did I do today? What wild adventure do I have as the bookend to this amazing adventure? Nothing really. For my last day I spent the time giving back to my gracious hosts. The living room (also my bedroom) was still dirty from the gathering on the first night here, so I decided to do the right thing and help clean up. They didn't have to let me sleep here, they did it out of the kindness of their hearts, so the least I could do was help out a little bit.
They all went to work for the day, so instead of hitching a ride out to some part of the city, I remained at the apartment. I put something on the TV, and I cleaned. I swept the floors, washed the dishes, ran the dishwasher, and cleaned up my corner of the room (although that was also in preparation for my flight tomorrow).
It was a good way to remind myself how to assimilate back into being a part of a living situation. From now on I can't just take the sheets off the bed and leave, like I have been doing the last two months, I have responsibilities again. I know it's not the most exciting thing in the world, and it's probably not what you came here to read about, sorry about that.
But today wasn't a bad day in the slightest. There is definitely something therapeutic in cleaning, as long as you take breaks, which I did. I had a large part of the day to spend, so there wasn't exactly a rush.
Later on in the day, I got a call from one of my best friends from home, good old Mikey G. We were both excited to finally be able to hang out again after the two month hiatus, and spent a lengthy phone conversation catching up and talking about other random stuff. I'm excited to get back.
Once my hosts got back we had a spaghetti dinner and I tried to finish off what was left of the food I had gathered over the last few days. I did leave some for breakfast for myself though. Always thinking ahead.
The rest of the night was spent with friends, talking about whatever came to mind. You know, that thing you do when you hang out with people. Los Angeles was a great way for me to get used to not being alone again. Even though some of my time here was also spent alone. But surrounding myself with friends is the perfect buffer before I finally make it home. I will welcome this of course, but I know I will be flooded with all kinds of questions and conversations about what I did and where I went. I will enjoy it, but I know it will be draining too, so it was good to dip my toes in before cannonballing right into the deep end.
I'm not sure what the future will hold for this blog, but I know there won't be much travel for at least a little while. Sometime in the next few weeks I will post again, and try to explain what I think will work for me. That could mean anything from retiring the page entirely to posting every day. It all depends on what kind of work load I can handle. So check back every so often if you're interested in seeing where this goes.
For now, if you've been waiting on the east coast, get ready for the return. It's finally time.
Thank you so much for reading this (I really mean it). This trip would not have been the same without the inspiration to keep writing, and a lot of that inspiration comes from you. I can't wait to look back on these posts years from now and relive all the amazing experiences I had. Again, thank you so much, and here's to tomorrow.
