Beached

Beached

The three of us stood at the edge of the water, wondering if the next wave would be the one to knock over the beached motorboat.

Before you go assuming anything, it wasn't our fault that the boat was stuck up on the rocks, we just found it there. Ok, I'll start over.

My friends Jason and Danielle came down from Massachusetts the other day to visit me in Rhode Island. I hadn't seen them since before I left for my world journey so it was great to see them. The first thing we did when they got here was go to one of my favorite Rhode Island parks, Beavertail. The park is a rocky peninsula in southern Rhode Island with a slightly underwhelming lighthouse on the end. What I enjoy about the park though is the rocky coast that has been carved by the ocean waves over hundreds of years. There is no sandy beach, the waves crash against large climb-able rocks. So we walked around on the rocks and that's when we came upon the boat.

My guess is that it had somehow become detached from the rope holding it in place in the harbor and drifted, eventually being pushed up onto the rocks here at Beavertail. It was very odd. Whoever owned the boat clearly had no idea it had happened since the boat remained unmoved for at least an hour. I imagine someone taking a smaller boat out into the harbor this weekend to find their boat missing and finding no explanation.

After Beavertail we stopped at a beach for a few minutes because the Del's truck had also stopped there. We sipped our frozen beverages on the beach before heading into Newport.

First we did the Newport Cliffwalk, passing by the numerous mansions along the Newport coast. I would take even the smallest of those houses.

I've been on the Cliffwalk before, but we went further than I've ever gone before. There are two tunnels (at least) that lead under people's yards. One of them was very picturesque with some kind yellow moss growing around it:

After the cliffs we returned to Newport for dinner. We walked around what must have been the whole town (but probably not) until we settled on a place called O'Briens. As Jason said it was the place where parents would have a drink while they're kids ran around. There was a bar inside but outside they also had a fountain filled with various children's water toys. But the food was good and not as expensive as some of the other places so it worked out.

Back home we played the game Forbidden Island, in which the players work as a team to collect four treasures while the island is constantly sinking into ocean. Fortunately we made it off the island with all four treasures in tact.

We watched the USA vs Brazil beach volleyball match before Jason and Danielle had to head home. I've always been a fan of beach volleyball, it gets so intense. Even though this was only for the bronze medal it was still very exciting, with the US team coming back to win it in the final set.

It's days like this that I don't miss traveling so much.

So I finally posted again! I still don't know exactly how often I will post but it's good to know being home hasn't made me give up completely. I don't think I'll stick to any schedule, I'll post when I feel the day is worth talking about. Hopefully that's more often than not. Thanks for reading and here's to tomorrow!
